Dinosaur

I told Cindy, my fiery-sidekick, that I have become a dinosaur in the modern church. I am a Baptist. I went to a Baptist church w/mom before I was saved, became a Baptist because of convictions, as a young man, after I was born-again, and have been a Baptist minister since God’s special call on my life. I have been known to associate w/the American, Independent, Landmark, Reformed, Southern and know some good-old Primitive too. Today I consider myself to be more of a Particular Baptist (John Gill to Spurgeon), but all-in-all I am just a plain O’ Baptist. I hold to the doctrines of grace (not hard-shell or hyper), I am local church (not universal or invisible), I believe that the OT/NT in the originals are the Word of God and that we have many good English translations (Yes, I love the KJV – [No, I am not KJV only] – because I also enjoy the NKJ, and the ESV). I wear a tie on Sunday mornings and Cindy wears a hat (1 Cor. 11:1-16) – we are usually over dressed, but we are in God’s house and deem that it is important (especially on Sunday morning worship) to be proper in worshiping our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I love to sing the old hymns (chorus is fine if scriptural – most are not). As a preacher I prefer to do expositional preaching of the different books of the Bible (ex: John MacArthur), textual exposition (ex. Albert Mohler, Jr. and/or Charles H. Spurgeon), and topical (ex: Arthur W. Pink). I am not happy with most of today’s sermons which are found to be mostly based on emotions instead of the Bible. Yes, the Bible is used for a text but usually the message has nothing to do with “Thus says, the Lord”, than it does more with “What do you need today”. I am a quiet man and prefer to worship that way. No, I am not a stuffed shirt and would never prohibit anyone from worshipping the Lord however they believe in accordance with the Book.  I come to worship God knowing that it is all about Him and not me. I struggle today because the church has seemingly passed me by and no longer appears to care or have need of my kind. Pity – because I love the Lord. I am a dinosaur who is fading away quickly in the church.
