Biblical Studying Rules

Questions to ask to begin your study –

Whenever one begins a study of a biblical subject that person should remember some of the most important aspects of studying.

1. Context – Context – Context: always see what comes before and what follows the verse/s or text you are studying.

2. Follow the sentence.

3. Ask: What, Why, When, Where, Who, and How.

4. Let Scripture interpret Scripture if it is applicable.

5. Know and understand: the background of the era, the meaning of the original words when they were used, the meaning of the English translation word, and learn to use basic tools (suggest: Mounce’s or Vine’s Expository Dictionary / Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance, a good Collegiate Dictionary [preferably an older issue] and perhaps a Study Bible – however be cautious – some of the commentary notes will be found to be bias according to its editor’s beliefs).

6. What did the author mean (authorial [original] intent) when he wrote with these words.

7. What did those who heard the message understood it to mean to them.

8. Application – How does it apply to today’s circumstances?

9. Is Christ revealed? Jesus Christ is the thesis of the Bible. We should always study with that purpose in mind (Ezra 7:10; 2 Timothy 2:15).
